Internationalizing Higher Education: UIN Sunan Kalijaga Partners with Leibniz Universität Hannover

Yogyakarta, March 30 – April 2, 2026 — UIN Sunan Kalijaga has strengthened its internationalization efforts in higher education through the development of its International Undergraduate Program (IUP) by hosting a global academic, Andreas Nehring from Leibniz Universität Hannover. The four-day program, held in Yogyakarta, forms part of the university’s strategic initiative toward becoming a world-class institution.

Prof. Nehring’s visit was part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of internationally oriented teaching and learning, particularly in the field of chemistry education. Throughout the program, he engaged in lectures, academic discussions, and strategic meetings with university leaders and the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (FITK).

Within this context, the IUP at UIN Sunan Kalijaga is designed to strengthen graduates’ competitiveness through an internationally standardized curriculum, the use of English as the medium of instruction, and the integration of global collaboration into the learning process. The involvement of international academics represents a concrete step toward achieving these goals.

During official meetings, various opportunities for collaboration were explored, including the development of joint research, student and faculty exchange programs, and the utilization of emerging educational technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. These initiatives are expected to enhance the quality of learning while expanding international academic networks.

Prof. Nehring emphasized that cross-border collaboration opens access to a wide range of international funding schemes and enriches the academic experience of university communities.

“This collaboration not only expands academic networks but also provides opportunities for students and faculty members to engage in the global research ecosystem,” he stated.

He also highlighted the importance of strengthening 21st-century skills in higher education.

“Critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills must become central to the learning process so that graduates are well-equipped to face global challenges,” he added.

The Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Noorhaidi, welcomed the collaboration as part of the university’s strategy to enhance its global reputation. He noted that the institution’s existing international achievements serve as a strong foundation for further development.

“We will continue to improve so that all academic disciplines can compete globally and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of humanity,” he affirmed.

As additional context, UIN Sunan Kalijaga has achieved notable global recognition, including ranking 37th worldwide in the QS World University Rankings by Subject and 7th globally in the Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2026 in the field of Religious Studies. These accomplishments reflect a significant increase in the university’s international visibility and academic reputation.

This initiative has had a direct impact on strengthening the quality of teaching and learning, enhancing faculty capacity, and expanding academic mobility opportunities for students. Furthermore, it forms part of the university’s long-term strategy to build a higher education ecosystem that is adaptive to global developments.

As a follow-up, both institutions plan to develop more concrete collaborative programs, including the formulation of joint research agendas, sustainable academic exchanges, and the integration of technology in cross-border learning.
